In the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation, The Improv Centre would like to acknowledge that our theatre is on the unceded and ancestral territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, including he xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. This land was once a rich sandbar that sustained the indigenous people, providing food, medicine, and resources for their communities to thrive. We are grateful for the freedom to create art and tell stories on this land and recognize that historically this was not a freedom afforded to everyone.
As we continue to learn about the history of this land, we encourage our audience members to do the same.
At The Improv Centre, we believe reconciliation starts with learning, listening, and taking action together. We support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and we encourage everyone — whether you live here, are visiting our community, or are part of the wider global community — to explore them too. It’s through small, ongoing steps that we can all help create a better future.
Read the full list of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action to learn more about how all sectors of society can contribute to healing and lasting change.
Call to Action 92 asks businesses across Canada to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and to provide education about the history and experiences of Indigenous peoples—including residential schools, Indigenous law, Treaties, and building respectful relationships.
For us, this means making space to learn — and inviting you to do the same.
Below are resources we’ve found helpful as an organization to learn about, engage, and support our Indigenous communities:
Discover places to shop, visit, and experience Indigenous culture and creativity.
Deepen your understanding through resources, history, and educational opportunities.
Take steps to support reconciliation efforts and honour Indigenous voices.
We’re using these resources ourselves — to learn, to seek out new experiences, to support Indigenous-owned businesses, and to take part in events that deepen our understanding. We invite you to join us in doing the same. Together, we hope to build a future rooted in respect, care, and opportunity for everyone. Reconciliation is a journey, and every step matters.
